<image:title>OLD Home - I am Shawna - a passionate and innovative therapist who believes strong mental health is rooted in resilience and connection.</image:title>
<image:caption>Research has shown that the relationship between therapist and client, or the therapeutic alliance, is the most important predictor of positive therapy outcomes. Working with me is a two-way street - I hold space for you and your process of change - you teach me about vulnerability, fear, perseverance, community, connection and love. We journey together through the process of growth and change.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Approach - My Therapy Approach</image:title>
<image:caption>Clients will often ask, “what type of therapy do you do?” and the answer is a combination of tools depending on what you need. I create a safe space for my clients to share their deepest truths and sit in the discomfort of their pain. Together we reimagine what is possible in the near and distant future. My approach to psychotherapy is based on Psychodynamic Theory, specifically on Strengths-based approaches that incorporate mindfulness techniques and cognitive reframing. These tools can help give you a new perspective on your resilience and strategies to help you better cope with life challenges. Knowledge from the areas of Attachment Theory, Trauma Theory, Cognitive Behavioural Psychology, and feminist analysis are a core part of my understanding. Modalities that I use include: Trauma therapy Narrative therapy Relational work Emotionally focussed therapy (EFT) for couples Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Brief solution-focussed counselling for those in crisis</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>I am a registered social worker and psychotherapist with 20 years of experience providing psychosocial support, education and advocacy to those with complex health needs. As a survivor of parental suicide and trauma early in life, my journey to become a therapist came from a place of post-traumatic growth and resilience. The crisis I experienced challenged the way I saw the world and my place in it. I grew a greater appreciation for life, created stronger intimate relationships with people and my community by increasing my empathy and compassion. I saw new opportunities and set new life goals, recognizing that bad experiences happen, we are vulnerable, but survival is possible. Ultimately, I grew a sense of spirituality through engagement with the bigger questions about my existence and humanity. These are things I want to share with you and help you to cultivate in your own life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A diagnosis of cancer – or any life-threatening illness – can throw your life into upheaval and cause trauma in the short-term and in the years to come. After a decade of working in oncology, I have distinct experience and expertise in working with those diagnosed with cancer, their children and their caregivers. Together l help you and your family to advocate for access to what you need and want. I strongly believe that with the right support, patients have the ability to drive their care and treatment preferences.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Couples Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Couples' Psychotherapy When the bond between partners becomes deep over time, they become particularly vulnerable to each other. Because of this intense vulnerability, partners tend to evoke feelings in each other that go back to a time when they were the most defenseless, namely to their childhood. We tend to bring to our intimate relationships all the expectations of ourselves and loved ones that we developed as children. If those around us were nurturing, we tend to approach our partners with trust. If our caregivers were belittling, we tend to hear our partners as overly critical. In this situation, one — or both partners can feel unheard and misunderstood. When this happens, people can go into a defence-attack mode. This prolonged dynamic can lead to loss of hope around the relationship, and to bitterness and resentment. Couples' Therapy can be helpful in this case.</image:caption>
